Sustainability Practice: Volcano Machinery Optimizes Packaging to Cut Plastic Waste in Export Shipment

Background of Packaging Optimization Project

Large-volume export of foam guns and sealant guns consumes plenty of packaging materials. Most traditional export packaging uses thick single-use plastic foam and individual plastic bags for each gun. As more European and North American brand partners set sustainable procurement requirements, Volcano Machinery launched a packaging reform project across both the Jinhua and Thailand factories.

Adjustments to Inner and Outer Packaging

The team replaced disposable plastic foam inserts with molded recycled pulp liners for cartons. Individual plastic bags for each gun are replaced by thin recyclable PE film on request, and bulk carton packing options are offered for brand partners who will repack the goods locally. Outer export cartons adopt FSC-certified corrugated paper, and printing is switched to water-based ink to reduce volatile solvent emission. The new packaging still keeps shock protection for precision gun components during long ocean shipping.

Impact on Logistics and Clients

The new pulp packaging takes similar container space as the old foam packaging, so it does not raise shipping costs. For clients with carbon footprint reporting requirements, Volcano can provide packaging material specification documents for their sustainability reports. The company also keeps the original heavy-duty packaging option available for customers who transport goods through rough multi-stage logistics.

Next Sustainability Plan

Following packaging reform, the company will look into optimizing machining scrap recycling at two factories. Metal scraps from gun body machining are already sorted and recycled, and the next step is to improve the recovery rate of leftover sealant and foam test waste from the internal testing lab. Volcano states that sustainable improvement will be a long-running routine rather than a one-time adjustment.
